Before the Assessment
Before we meet, we'll verify your insurance benefits, gather important paperwork, and ask about your child's developmental history, medical background, and current concerns. If your child has previous evaluations, school reports, or therapy records, those can help us develop a more complete picture.
During the Assessment
Every child is different, so every assessment is individualized. Rather than expecting your child to sit at a table for hours, we use play, observation, and natural interaction to learn how they communicate, play, learn, and respond to their environment.
During the assessment, we may observe:
- Communication and language skills
- Social interaction and play
- Daily living and adaptive skills
- Learning readiness
- Behavior patterns
- Areas of strength and opportunities for growth
We also spend time talking with you. Parents know their child best, and your input is one of the most valuable parts of the assessment.
Will My Child Be Forced to Do Things?
Absolutely not.
At Variabilities, we believe meaningful learning begins with trust and connection. Our assessments are child-centered, compassionate, and paced according to your child's comfort level. We strive to create a positive experience that allows your child to interact naturally while we gather the information needed to build an effective treatment plan.
What Happens Next?
After the assessment, your BCBA will develop an individualized treatment plan with recommendations tailored to your child's needs. We then submit the plan to your insurance provider for authorization. Once approved, we'll work with your family to schedule services and begin therapy.

How long does an ABA assessment take?
Most assessments take several hours and may be completed over one or more visits, depending on your child's needs and insurance requirements. These will be a combination of evaluating your child in their home, interviewing with caregivers and/or teachers and compiling the assessment information within our report.
Can I stay during the assessment?
Yes. Parent participation is an important part of the assessment process.
What should I bring?
Comfort items, snacks, and any previous evaluations or reports are always helpful. We would love to have your loved one’s favorite things as part of the assessment!
